Getting those two elements to not only coexist but thrive together is a needle that Hyper Light Drifter confidently threads. In our review of the developer’s Hyper Light Drifter, we praised the top-down action game for its combination of story and gameplay: “It replaces traditional narrative structures with moods, but punctuates those contemplative, quiet moments with constant scenes of breakneck, pitch-perfect action. While there’s quite a serious story as you play as a Voidrunner called Rei seemingly the last of her kind trying to save her world from being destroyed by a black hole by embarking on a suicide mission inside it, it’s the fundamental gameplay of Solar Ash that immediately grabs you. You navigate this black hole that is threatening to destroy your home planet as the Voidrunner, Rei.
